What's Inside the Workboxes for Fifth Grade?

Even though we are STILL on holiday break due to an out-of-state swim meet and the annual winter visit from my snowbird parents, we are gearing up to start back to school next Tuesday.  Before break, though, here is a peek inside my 5th grade son's workboxes on a typical day.

Workbox 1:  He is instructed to complete 15 minutes of typing practice on the computer.  I keep a timer right by the computer and we use Typing Instructor for Kids 4

Workbox 2:  Daily Handwriting Practice from Evan-Moor.  I really like this curriculum because the handwriting practice is broken down into 5 daily lessons which focus on a theme.

Workbox 3:  Spectrum Word Study and Phonics Grade 5.  Mason completes one side of the page 4 times a week or 2 pages per week.

Workbox 4:  In this box, Mason is instructed to read a book on Raz-Kids and take the quiz.  He is also instructed to watch a specific video on BrainPop and take the quiz after watching the video.  Since BrainPop has hundreds and hundreds of videos, I can often find a video that ties in with the unit study we are doing.  If not, I choose a video to reinforce skills he is working on in English and Math.

Workbox 5:  Spelling Workout Level D.  In addition to his workbook page for the day, he is instructed to do TEST ME on Spelling City over his spelling words.  I just started using Spelling City a few months ago and have found it very helpful for spelling word practice.

Workbox 6:  Since Mason was working on a compare/contrast essay for his Bob Jones English 4 course, he has multiple resources in his workbox for the day.  Included is a t-chart, workbook pages related to the compare/contrast essay assignment, informational print-outs from National Geographic Kids, and a Venn Diagram.  In his essay, he was comparing and contrasting alligators and crocodiles.  I took everything out of the workbox so it could be easily viewed.

Workbox 7:  Fun coloring and following directions activity from Enchanted Learning.  Mason still enjoys coloring so I included this fun page printed on cardstock.  After he was finished, we cut it out and hung it on our handmade ornaments tree in the kitchen.

Workbox 8:  Reading comprehension activity from Fortunately For You Books to go along with "How the Grinch Stole Christmas."

Workbox 9:  FOCUS on Recognizing Cause and Effect Level D.  Mason completes one lesson in a FOCUS reading comprehension book 4 times per week.

Workbox 10:  Illusion Art by Jane Bingham.  Mason was working through this book independently.  Even though the majority of the book was text and pictures, there were several projects to complete in the book as well.  Mason worked on creating his own tessellating pattern.

Workbox 11:  Writing With Ease Level 2.  Mason completes 2 lessons 4 times a week.  If he is doing a lot of writing for our current unit study, I drop WWE for the day.

Workbox 12:  Daily Math Practice Grade 5 and Daily Word Problems Grade 5.  Mason is also instructed to complete a lesson in Teaching Textbooks 5.
